This workshop will offer staff and volunteers of community kitchens, food pantries, and shelters tools to understand and work effectively with guests who exhibit challenging behaviors. We will discuss what those guests are communicating through their actions, as well as:

  • The array of mental health diagnoses most likely to affect your guests
  • How to differentiate between “bad behavior” and symptoms of mental illness
  • How to avoid power struggles and burnout
  • Social issues that intersect with mental illness and contribute to hunger and homelessness
  • Nutrition and mental illness
