The West Side Ecumenical Ministry for the Elderly (WEME) was founded in 1973 with the mission to help improve the quality of life for frail or homebound older adults. The program provides nutritious meals and human interaction six days a week in the largest home-delivered meal program in their community. In 2009 WEME served 104,000 meals to 450 particpants. While a large portion of funding for the program comes from government sources, WEME recently developed a privately-funded program to identify, reach out to and serve older adults who have significant need but have recently been made ineligible for government-funded meals.
